  79.  public  about what  software was available.  Distributing Shareware
  80.  software  through computer  bulletin  boards  was the  very logical
  81.  solution that  soon  became  standard  procedure for  all Shareware
  82.  authors.  By allowing  programs to be copied  from  bulletin boards
  83.  and shared  with  few  restrictions, Shareware  is able  to reach a
  84.  much greater number of users.

  136.  The shareware concept makes it possible for you to obtain extremely
  137.  powerful software at  a price you can afford, and  it gives you the
  138.  opportunity to try the software before you register.
  139.  The   Association   of   Shareware   Professionals   (ASP),  is  an
  140.  organization  formed to strengthen  the  future of  shareware.  Its
  141.  members, all  of whom are programmers  that subscribe to a  code of
  142.  ethics, are  committed to the concept  of shareware as a  method of
  143.  marketing.
  144.  The ASP sets standards for its members and their shareware products
  145.  which provide  (among other things)  that programs produced  by ASP
  146.  members must be fully documented, non-crippled, and offered with at
  147.  least a minimum level of support.  It also  sets the  standards for
  148.  shareware  disk  vendors  and  provides  information to  the public
  149.  about shareware.
  150.  Shareware  software is  a  unique  marketing approach  which allows
  151.  consumers to  purchase  software  directly  from  the author.  This
  152.  eliminates  costly  marketing,  promotion,  and packaging; allowing
  153.  consumers  to  obtain  quality  software   at  a  fraction  of  the
  154.  commercial  cost.  Shareware  authors  allow  their  programs to be
  155.  copied and  distributed with few restrictions.  Shareware users are
  156.  encouraged  to  examine  a  program,  copy  it,  and  pass it on to
  157.  friends.  If users find the software program useful, they are asked
  158.  to register with the software author.  This usually  means paying a
  159.  registration fee directly to the  shareware author.  In  return for
  160.  this  registration fee,  "registered  users"  receive the  right to
  161.  continue  to  use  the  software  and  added  benefits such as full
  162.  documentation,  technical  support,  and   future  updates  of  the
  163.  program.
  164.  Registration is the key to  success for the  shareware concept.  If
  165.  you try  a program and  it does  not  meet your needs,  you are not
  166.  expected to register.  However, if you try a  program, like it, and
  167.  continue  to  use  it,  you  should  compensate  the  author with a
  168.  registration fee.  Registration also insures further development of
  169.  the  program.  Shareware  is  the  "try-before-you-buy"   method of
  170.  software  distribution that  will  literally  save you  hundreds of
  171.  dollars on software purchases.

  204.  Register your favorite shareware  programs directly with the author
  205.  of the shareware  program.  These  authors work  many long hours to
  206.  produce  and  test  these  programs  that  are on the SoftwareVAULT
  207.  CD-ROM.  They have earned the right to be paid for their efforts by
  208.  the sweat of their brow.
  209.  The registration price for a shareware is usually very small ($5.00
  210.  -  $85.00 US).  Registering  a  program  brings  with it additional
  211.  benefits.  In most cases, you  will get the  latest version  of the
  212.  program  and   a  printed  manual.  Most   shareware  programs  are
  213.  constantly  being improved  so when  you register,  there is a good
  214.  chance  that  you  will  get  a  newer  version  the  one  you  are
  215.  registering for.  You will also be  eligible for technical  support
  216.  (usually by phone, letter or  CompuServe).  The  registered version
  217.  will also  be free of any  trailers or opening (nag) screens on it,
  218.  telling you to register.
  219.  If you register a program from  outside of the USA, you should mail
  220.  the author a US-draft or a bank check in US-Dollars.  If the author
  221.  accepts Visa  or  Mastercard,  you  can  simply  give  your  Visa /

  900.  SCREEN Thief  has been designed  to solve a  range of problems  and
  901.  annoyances found with other screen grabbing programs. Many examples
  902.  exist,  often bundled  with a  graphic manipulation  tool or  paint
  903.  package but  sometimes marketed separately.  We reckon that  SCREEN
  904.  Thief succeeds where the rest fail.
  905.  Specific  problems that  have been  solved include  loss of  colour
  906.  attribute information  and corrupt palettes  plus the awareness  of
  907.  graphic  adapter  effects  such  as  horizontal  and vertical pixel
  908.  panning  and   split  screens.  SCREEN  Thief   easily  copes  with
  909.  non-standard  video modes  employed by  games, such  as 320  by 240
  910.  pixels  in 256  colours. It  also takes  programmed soft fonts into
  911.  full  consideration when  capturing text  mode screens.  Indeed, we
  912.  believe that  whatever the standard VGA  graphic adapter is capable
  913.  of displaying, SCREEN Thief can capture.
  914.  This  sophisticated 'total  solution' also  extends to  the hot-key
  915.  used  to  trigger  a  screen  capture.  Many programs, particularly
  916.  games, prevent  capture with lesser grabbing  packages because they
  917.  steal the  keyboard interrupt vector and  refuse to pass interrupts
  918.  back to  previously installed programs.  Solutions to this  problem
  919.  have so  far included delayed-action grabbing,  which is inaccurate
  920.  to say the  least and also fails where a  program steals the system
  921.  timer interrupt used for counting out the delay period.
  922.  SCREEN   Thief  gets   around  this   major  problem   by  secretly
  923.  reprogramming the interrupt hardware to a different set of vectors.
  924.  When a program steals the keyboard  or timer interrupt it no longer
  925.  gets first pick, but a  fake hardware interrupt generated by SCREEN
  926.  Thief's resident code.  This technique works in all  but a few rare
  927.  instances.  Another implication  is that,  with some  restrictions,
  928.  screens can  also be captured  under Microsoft Windows  even though
  929.  SCREEN Thief is a DOS-hosted program.
  930.  One further  positive feature is  that SCREEN Thief  creates output
  931.  files in any of several common image formats (GIF, TIF, PCX or BMP)
  932.  rather  than through  a proprietary  interim file  which requires a
  933.  second conversion  stage before use.  When combined with  a host of
  934.  other configurable  options, intelligent image  file naming and  an
  935.  extensive internal  help system, you  can see that  SCREEN Thief is
  936.  the ultimate screen capture package for the professional user.
  937.  Finally,  through absolute  use of  machine code  and clever memory
  938.  optimisations, you  will find SCREEN  Thief to be  one of the  most
  939.  compact Terminate  and Stay Resident (TSR)  programs you ever load.
  940.  It can use  EMS memory, Upper Memory Blocks  provided by an XMS/UMB
  941.  driver  or  similar  and  normal  system  memory to maximum effect.
  942.  Typical system memory use amounts to just over 2K. Even when loaded
  943.  on a PC  with no EMS or UMB  memory, requirements can be as  low as
  944.  9.1K.
  945.  System Requirements
  946.  SCREEN  Thief  has  a  number  of  important  minimum  hardware and
  947.  software  requirements.  A  VGA   graphics  adapter,  on-board  VGA
  948.  controller or register-level compatible  is essential. SCREEN Thief
  949.  cannot work with the MDA, Hercules, CGA or EGA adapters even though
  950.  it will  successfully capture their  equivalent video modes  on the
  951.  VGA. The  host PC needs  to be an  80286 or better  based IBM AT or
  952.  close  compatible.  A  hard  disk   is  not  essential  but  highly
  953.  recommended. Finally, MSDOS version 3.10 or higher is essential.
